My absolute favourite thing to wear in the summer? It’s hands down a white dress of some variety. Shirtdress, A-line dress, off shoulder dress…If it’s white, I want it! Wearing white is a touch trickier than other colors though. There’s a thought process that comes along with it so I thought I’d share my three rules for wearing white! Read on to see what they are and for more details of this perfect white dress that’s going to take you from the office to dinner!
Three rules to rocking that white dress all summer long:
- 1. Check the fit
Sometimes when your LBD is a little snug you may just shrug your shoulders, throw on your spanx and go with it. Wearing white definitely doesn’t afford you that luxury. My rule is to generally size up when purchasing a white garment. Especially so with jeans!! Forget the size on the tag when purchasing white! Fit is way more important! White pants can be extremely unflattering if not the right size, as can dresses. Which brings us to number 2:
- 2. Take caution to wear the right undergarments
True story: When I was 20 years old I was working very briefly at a super trendy Montreal hotspot. All the girls had to wear white dresses and I naively went in wearing white undergarments under a white dress. I thought that was the right thing to do. WRONG. Halfway through the night I realized that you could see my underwear and I was mortified. Lesson learned. I know own about a dozen pairs of nude Hanky Pankys and they are my go to all summer long! If the white is thick enough, you may be fine with white undergarments but why risk it I say.
- 3. Go for an unexpected fabric or silhouette.
Because the last thing you want is people asking if it’s your bridal shower or bachelorette party 😉 A classic white shirtdress is a must in my books. White maxis tends to err more on the side of bride on her honeymoon wardrobe. White A Line skirt? Definitely! White lace camisole dress that makes you look like it’s your communion? Not so much. Classic shapes and silhouettes are key for a streamlined professional look that you can wear to work or to social occasions.
This white scalloped shirt dress just had to be mine when I saw it! It’s the right size, it’s a classic style (can be worn to the office or out!) and it has that unexpected detail in the scalloped edges.
For reference, I’m wearing a size 2 and as mentioned, it fits on the larger side of things. I feel like a 0 would have just been too tight on the chest for me and would have cheapened the dress!
