I’m all about a good hot chocolate during the cold winter months- it’s always the perfect treat no matter what time of day. I thought I’d try something a little different though- a fun spin on the usual cocoa! Everyone loves s’mores so why not add a s’mores topping? It’s surprisingly easy to make and can be even prepped ahead of time. Perfect for kids, adults and anyone in between 😉
The key to the recipe is using a light touch to incoprorate all of your favourite ingredients! Too much of a heavy hand means dripping chocolate and cookies all over the place- not bad if you’re in a restaurant but not so fun to clean up at home!
Read on for the recipe and happy holidays!
Side note- I’m keeping this version kid friendly with no booze- but if you wanted to add a little Bailey’s in the mix, it’ll definitely keep you extra warm!
S’mores Topped Hot Chocolate
Toppings to create 4 mugs:
- 12 large marshmallows
- 3 ounces milk chocolate
- 1/4 cup crushed graham crackers
- Your favourite hot cocoa recipe!
Place graham crackers in a small shallow dish that can accommodate the rim of the mug.
Using a double boiler method or a microwave, melt chocolate down. I prefer double boiler because I have more control over it!
Remove chocolate from heat when melted. Take mug and gently place it rim down in the chocolate. Make sure to turn it in 45 degree angles so that it’s well covered. Lift mug up, letting any excess chocolate drip off.
Immediately place rim in graham crackers. Lift up and place mug back on it’s bottom side.
At this point I like to place the mugs in the fridge for a quick 5 minutes. This helps harden the chocolate, making sure the crackers adhere to it and not fall off!
Using the flame on a gas burner or a mini creme brûlée torch, gently scorch the tops of the marshmallows. Set aside. If you’re using your stove top, just make sure to place the marshmallows on a wooden stick just like you would traditional s’mores!
Pour hot chocolate/cocoa into mug and top with marshmallows!
Serve and enjoy.
